College student Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) enrolls in Philosophy 150 and his class assignment leads him to the classroom of a rigid and challenging Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). But on the first day of class, Wheaton is in for more than he can imagine. Professor Radisson immediately sets the tone for his class in declaring that God is dead and instructs his students to write those words down on paper suggesting that once they get passed that avenue as a topic for consideration, their disclaiming God will result in an easy grade. Conflicted between his future and his Christian faith, he cannot write what Professor Radisson wants him to write down and explains why. Irritated, yet sly, Radisson challenges Wheaton to defend the exact opposite. Raising the stakes, Radisson tells Wheaton that not only will he have to debate him in front of the class, but his grade will depend on how well he can convince the class (setting them as a sort of jury) that there is a God.
While Wheaton prepares for his debate against his well trained philosophy instructor, all sorts of challenges come his way that not only poses as risk to his grade and future aspirations, but also his personal life as well as the project is viewed as an inconvenience and hindrance to the relationship he has with his girlfriend. And yet as these challenges weigh heavier and heavier, breakthroughs begin to happen, curiosity is aroused, and the nature of these events reveal what many hearts and minds conceal within them. And so we see this “ripple effect” take place revealing the priorities of the people involved and beyond, how they value other people, and the nature of their pride.
My Take:
I really enjoyed this movie because of the direct approach it takes. It serves, in a dramatic way, as a testament to human nature, pride, and how the human heart has a tendency to craft its own understanding of truth, and how it responds to challenges to that understanding. In that, it is a movie that addresses circumstances, personalities, and how God fits, or is not permitted to fit in a person’s life.
I highly recommend seeing this movie. It addresses issues openly, honestly, and with a level of maturity that is universal. In that it is not a movie that wrongfully characterizes people by means of caricature. It is well done and thought provoking.
The film is rated PG and runs 1 hour and 43 minutes.
