TV On DVD: Perfect Strangers
It was the essential “buddy sitcom” of the 80’s. Perfect Strangers, the series that lasted from 1986-1993 is now on DVD. Perfect Strangers is about a man named Larry Appleton (Mark-Linn Baker), who leaves Wisconsin for Chicago. As Larry is just getting used to bachelor life, he gets a knock on the door from a distant cousin named Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot), a strange, but goodhearted soul who came to America from a bizarre Mediterranean country called Mypos. From there, Larry takes Balki into his pad, and from there, it starts an array of bizarre situations and odd plot lines.
Perfect Strangers is an all time favorite of mine in the sense that it’s funny, it’s entertaining, and it has class. The episodes on the DVDs look clean (restored) and each one runs about 25 minutes in length, not like those syndicated versions which average about 21-22 minutes. Perfect Strangers holds a lot of laughs, and this DVD release contains the first two seasons.
Perfect Strangers originated in the Spring of 1986 on ABC’s widely popular TGIF, which was a Friday night block of 4 all new shows that made you look forward to Friday nights. It’s slapstick physical comedy routines, dialogue, and comical timing made this show popular. By 1989, another hit show was spun-off from Perfect Strangers, and that was “Family Matters (1989-1998).”
And so I recommend Perfect Strangers to anyone who simply wants to laugh and have a good time.
Fun Fact: Robert L. Miller and Miller L. Boyett also worked on three other famous shows. Can you guess what they are?
Answer: Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, and Laverne and Shirley. In fact, I caught a few bits used on Perfect Strangers that were copied from Laverne and Shirley. The one episode where Shirley taught Laverne how to drive using groceries, was used in the Perfect Strangers episode where Larry teaches Balki how to drive using groceries. Then in another episode, Larry and Balki entering a tough bar and were hung on the coat racks by their coats echoed an episode of Laverne and Shirley in which both Lavene and Shirley were hung in their coats on the coat racks. There might be others, but hey, that’s television, and something probably noticed by TV nerds like me.
