If you liked The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon, they you may, or may not like Hannibal Rising.
Hannibal Rising begins in 1941 when, the Nazis are invading parts of the Soviet Union. In the process, Hannibal Lechter's parents are killed, and his sister is killed as well....for food.
As Hannibal grows up, he is constantly haunted by his sister being hauled off to be butchered. It morbidly disturbs him to a point to where he wants what was done to her, done to the very men who did it to her. In his journey, young Hannibal meets a woman by the name of Mischa who teaches Hannibal parts of her culture, including self-defense techniques. As he grows more knowledgeable, he becomes more thirsty for revenge, and his lust for wanting to get it causes his eerie calmnesses and even his ability to pass lie detector tests. In the end, he must either choose revenge or he must choose Mischa, whom he has drawn an attraction to.
Hannibal Rising was a film that didn't really need to be made, but it in fact, was interesting to see what direction Thomas Harris (the writer of all the novels) was going to take us regarding the direction of Hannibal Lechter's origins.
Out of five stars, I would have to give it 3, mainly because of the fact that the other three films can stand just fine on their own without this one. Even though it is interesting, it just doesn't quite measure up, and because it doesn't measure up, it feels like a completely different story, but with the names of the characters being that of the main star of all the other Hannibal movies.
