When the Goosebumps books came out, I had no interest in them. My sister and her friends used to read them all the time in the 1990’s. When the low-budget Goosebumps TV series was on in the mid to late 90’s, I thought that [the parts I saw anyway] was tremendously hokey, and I never watched a full episode. Then not too long ago, a couple of friends of mine wanted to go see the new Goosebumps movie, when they ran a trailer for it while going to see another movie. When they were serious about going to see it, I was reluctant to actually go, but thought, why not, at least I could maybe find some humor in it…. And I did.
The Story:
Two boys by the name of Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and Sam (Caleel Harris) go into an old run down house, and in trying to look for something that they can sell, they find an old leather-bound book and a creepy looking dummy, which they take with them. When a neighborhood bully, Tommy Madigan (Peyton Wich), tries to intimidate them into giving him what they found, the dummy all of a sudden comes to life and by magic, depants Tommy. Furious, the bully chases the two boys, but the dummy throws all sorts of traps and hurdles their way, protecting the two boys. After they bring the dummy home, they find out that it is alive, and that its name is Slappy (voiced by Mick Wingert). After Sonny’s sister Sarah goes to a club and sees the guy she likes kissing another girl, she goes home horribly upset. The dummy hears of her experience and then goes to the school, where the guy is up on a ladder, preparing for the school play. Slappy causes him to have an “accident,” making the enforcements that keep the folding ladder folded snap, and both sides of the ladder fall down flat, causing him to go down with it. When it is discovered to all that Slappy is real and what he did, he reveals that all he wants is a family to belong to. When they are resistant to accept him into their family, he starts to turn on them, and goes on a mission to create a newer, bigger family. Modeled after Sonny’s science project, Slappy tries to generate tremendous power through the local Tesla plant to bring to life a whole population of R.L. Stine characters, Halloween decorations all throughout the town, masks and costumes melting into people, and even giving life to candy, creating a string of killer gummy bears. So, the boys and their sister have to try and stop Slappy from his big scheme, and try to restore everything back to normal again.
My Take:
I thought this movie was hilarious. First of all, I love the mom in this movie. The mom is played by Wendi McLendon-Covey, who also plays the mom on the hit ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. She adds to this movie that spirit and liveliness that she has in The Goldbergs. Also, Ken Jeong plays the nextdoor neighbor, Mr. Chu, a corny kind of guy, though actually funny in this movie, who really gets into the spirit of the holiday by decorating his yard very heavily with Halloween decorations. I think this movie was made to be funny through the eyes of an adult, and made to be more of a thriller, or an action/ adventure film to kids. All in all, the movie is just simply fun, funny, and entertaining. It is a movie that can be enjoyed every Halloween if you are looking for a Halloween themed movie to be entertained by.
All in all, out of 4 stars, I would have to give this movie 3.
The movie is rated PG and runs 1 hour and 30 minutes.
