The Story:
The movie begins where a young woman is running barefoot in the snow away from someone or something. The next day, her body is discovered in the open land of the Wind River Indian Reservation by Corey Lambert (Jeremy Renner), a hunter for the Fish and Wildlife Department (who kills dangerous animals in order to protect residents and livestock). Lambert recognizes the body as Natalie, the daughter of one of his friends who lives on the reservation. The FBI sends one agent to the reservation to investigate the matter, an agent by the name of Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen). While she examines the body, she picks Lambert’s brain, and impressed by his hunting skills and knowledge of the region, she asks him to help her find the “predator” that killed her. And so Jane, Corey, and Ben, the Indian Tribal Police chief (Graham Greene) begin going around looking for clues to help solve her murder.
In looking for clues, they discover the body of Natalie’s boyfriend and run into some extremely dangerous encounters from there. It is when Lambert and Banner reach an oil drilling camp does something occur that causes heavy distrust among the oil workers and the tribal police that Ben takes with him, from which the film takes a turn and heads into an incredibly suspenseful plot twist. It is from there that the killer turns up, the heat is turned up, things start to make sense, and a remarkable ending results from it.
My Take:
Wind River is one of those all around smart movies. As you watch it and examine the details, it builds up assumptions and then as further details come to light, it “knocks them down.” In other words, it is a movie that is unpredictable, suspenseful, and well thought out, and I love movies like that. It is fast paced and very intriguing. If you like movies like that, then you will love this movie.
Out of 4 stars, I give Wind River 4 stars.
The film is rated R and runs approximately 1 hour and 47 minutes.
