The Story:
After being fired from the Anti-Villian League for not defeating the latest bad guy, Gru (Steve Carell) is not sure what to do next. While soul searching, an old English man approaches Gru to inform him that he has a twin brother named Dru (also played by Steve Carrell). To verify this newfound revelation, Gru visits his mother (Julie Andrews) who tells him that it’s true, and that when she divorced his father, she ended up with Gru and his father ended up with Dru. So Gru pursues Dru, and they meet. Upon meeting, Gru finds out that Dru is incredibly wealthy and that his primary interest is villainy. Dru then tries to persuade Gru to come back to villainy (i.e. “the family business”), and Gru eventually gives in, and comes up with an idea for a “heist.”
The “heist” in this case is recovering a diamond that a former 80’s child star turned super villain stole at the beginning of the movie to turn into reality a diabolical scheme from one of his show’s old episodes. Balthazar Bratt (played by Trey Parker of South Park fame), the villain that Gru failed to defeat at the beginning (and thus prompted him to lose his job) wants to get his revenge on Hollywood for the cancellation of his show years ago, and the diamond provides the energy for his giant robot to cut Hollywood out of Los Angeles, and send it into space. Will this scheme go as planned, or can Gru and Dru heist the diamond to prevent his plan from becoming reality?
My Take:
Despicable Me 3 is a film that not only kids will enjoy, but adults will also. This movie is, in my opinion, creative, entertaining, and very funny. One of the things I liked most about this third installment is that it kept up with the momentum of the first two movies, and were just as entertaining.
Out of 5 stars, I would have to give this movie 4 stars.
The movie is rated PG and runs about 1hour and 29 minutes.
