Lightning McQueen returns to the track in the third chapter of the high octane Cars series.
The Story:
The movie begins with yet another day at the race track, where Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is enjoying another winning streak. But the day arrives when a new racer enters the track and McQueen meets his match. Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a next generation, high tech rookie beats McQueen in the race and puts a real dent in his pride, and a real threat to the end of his racing days. Determined to beat Storm, McQueen over exerts himself far beyond his limits and encounters a fatal crash. Still determined to beat Storm, and try once more to save his career, McQueen seeks the services of a trainer, a trainer by the name of Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo). In the process of his training, McQueen finds out Ramirez’s potential, and is emphatically jealous of it. But when McQueen learns that Ramirez grew up as a fan of McQueen’s, it disorients him, and he doesn’t know what to do from there. Looking for answers, he seeks the counsel of an old car named Smokey (Chris Cooper), who knew Doc Hudson, (McQueen’s chief motivator, mentor, and inspiration) for years, and tells McQueen that Doc’s biggest joy was coaching and building up McQueen, not his hey days in racing. So McQueen is faced with the choice of losing, giving it all up, or doing something incredibly different that would make him swallow his pride.
My take:
I really liked this movie, its story, its insights, and its heart. The Cars franchise, I believe, redeemed itself from Cars 2 which had fallen short of the standards from the first film and aligned itself with political overtones that were too strong for children, and a bit overbearing for adults. This movie reconnected its spirit with its roots (the first Cars movie), and brought with it both a lesson and positive message along with it.
It is a movie that deserves 5 out of 5 stars, and one that I highly recommend.
