The film begins with a message to the masses by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), whom if you remember from the last film, is the leader of the societal structure which runs on a faction system that classifies people according to their psychological aptitude. In her address to the factions, Jeanine steps up her attack on divergents everywhere with a very powerful lie against them. So not only are Tris (Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), and the others who accompany them fugitives of the system they live under, now they have to be even more careful that people under the control of the system do not recognize them and turn them in. While taking refuge within the Amity faction (who, if you will recall, are made up of farmers who value kindness, harmony, and happiness), disruptions by and consequences as a result of the divergents staying with them moves the leader of the faction, Johanna Reyes (Octavia Spencer) to evict them from their community, which leads them to take refuge in Candor. Meanwhile, Jeanine is testing divergents to try and unlock a box that her men found within the Prior family’s home that bears the symbols of each and every faction. The test actually causes the death of one divergent, and shall we just say, costs more out of Tris when she is captured than she could ever imagine.
All in all, it is a story that keeps up the pace, and continues the suspense, intrigue, and interesting plot twists of the first film.
And like its predecessor, I would say that it measures up to the integrity of the first film, thus deserving 4 stars.
The film is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour and 59 minutes.
