If you like movies that are action packed, and has a meaningful message behind it, then this movie is for you.
The Story:
We meet a man by the name of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a man who likes to be an encouraging influence to those around him, whether it is at work, or in his private life, and does whatever he can to help inspire them to reach their full potential. And yet in one case, McCall meets a young woman by the name of Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), who works as a prostitute under the control of a group of Russian gangsters. After seeing how she is mistreated by both the gangsters she works for, and how she is demeaned by her clients, McCall’s is deeply bothered by what he sees, and decides to get involved in hopes to remove her from her situation. By the means of his efforts to get her out, He finds himself in the middle of a Russian mafia network comprised of some very shrewd and extremely dangerous people. It is in the midst of this involvement we see that McCall is a highly skilled, former CIA agent who, despite his attempt to live a quiet life, is now re-engaged to action to try and free the girl, as well as defend the defenseless, and take it upon himself to “settle the score” against those who try to take something away from those who are helpless. In that McCall becomes an agent of justice, seeing to it that perpetrators who commit crimes and injustices are dealt with.
I really enjoyed this movie on many levels. It is action packed, suspenseful, and carries within it a unique level of value and purpose behind it in that the injustices done to those around him sparks a reaction in his conscience, which then activates the “beast within” which enables him to correct it. His only challenge at that point, is to try and control how far “the beast within” will go before something bad happens. To me, this is a movie about soul and its yearning for justice that disturbs the ambitions of evil people which then arouses them to take action, to try and stop him in order to secure the status quo, which rests on power, using fear and intimidation to advance their own ambitions.
Out of 4 stars, I would have to give the Equalizer 4 stars.
The film is rated R and runs 2 hours and 12 minutes.
