Denzel Washington plays Whip Whitaker, an airline pilot who, through a strong tactical maneuver, crash lands his plane, and saves most of the people on board. Amidst talk of divine intervention regarding the improbability of how Whip landed the plane the way he did, along with the investigations that followed the crash to examine the details as to what exactly caused the crash, evidence arises which forces Whitaker to confront his own personal addictions to alcohol and cocaine. As details gather that suggests that his use of drugs/alcohol was the cause of the crash, he is provided with the means to have his intoxicating condition covered up, and erased from the record. All he would have to do to protect himself (and his lifestyle) is to say the “right things” to get through the hearing. The only other option would be to tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may.
When I went into this movie the first time, it was not what I expected it to be. The crash of the airplane occurs within the first half hour (or so) of the film (which is epic), and the rest of the film is him battling his addiction in the midst of this very involved investigation that raises questions that address his addiction. To put it another way, Whitaker’s reckless behavior, in line with his addiction, causes him to “wander around”, skating on thin ice. Any mishap, amidst the press he’s been getting, and the looming investigation will either keep him looking like a hero, or bury him. In other words, it’s like watching a man walk a tightrope with his addiction as the central focus.
All in all, I did enjoy this movie. Its backdrop chronicled a famous biblical truth of “your sin will find you out,” along with another which becomes evident at the very end of this movie. I will just leave it at that.
Out of 4 stars, I give Flight 3.
The film is rated R and runs approximately 2 hours and 18 minutes.
