LA Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) are both personal friends on their off time, and partners by profession who take on many dangerous, life-threatening situations and zany domestic problems on the tough streets of L.A. Trying to chronicle their experiences within their profession, Taylor brings a camcorder with him to chronicle some of the hard stuff they have to deal with in their job. As we follow the lives of these two men, we also see their more lighthearted side as they work to start families of their own.
The plot might not sound the hottest, but it reminded me of the movie “The Hurt Locker” in the sense that the film follows the main characters, and you don’t really know what is going to happen next. In fighting some tough gangs, Taylor and Zavala hit a scenario that I did not expect, that added a different twist to the movie which to me made the whole story more than just an experience following two cops doing their hard jobs.
End of Watch is a good movie in the sense that it was very realistic and intense in certain areas. When this movie feels like it is going to go in a hum drum direction, it catches you off guard, and goes into a direction that is unexpected. That alone changed my entire outlook on this movie.
Out of 4 stars, I give this film 3.
The movie is rated R and runs 1 hour and 49 minutes.
