Set in 1931, in Franklin County Virginia, under the backdrop of the earliest years of the Great Depression, a group of brothers called the Bondurant Brothers run a lucrative bootlegging ring, supplying local businesspeople with liquor during prohibition.
Running a successful bootlegging ring is not an easy task for the Bondurant Brothers, Jim, Forrest, and Howard (Jason Clarke). For one, the law is on their trail, headed by a crooked Detective from Chicago named Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), who wants a cut of the Brother’s profits, which Forrest (Tom Hardy) rejects. This causes a lot of turmoil for the brothers, and almost costs one of them their life. Adding to the tensions between the Bondurant Brothers and the Law is stiff competition provided by Gangster Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman). Banner kills a local competitor “Bonnie and Clyde style” with a machine gun, which Jack (Shia LaBeouf) witnesses first hand. And so, the brothers are left to watch their backs, fight for what they have, and continue to make money, all of which leads to an epic showdown. All in all, it is a gritty story of money, being on guard, love, loss, and action.
While in my opinion, some scenes in the movie sort of dragged on, the film overall keeps you engaged, interested, and wondering what will happen next.
Out of 4 stars, I would have to give this movie 2 and a half.
The film is rated R and runs 1 hour and 55 minutes.
