Ryan Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a young CIA agent eager to get an assignment that will gain him recognition and move him up in the ranks of the organization. Finally, he is given a very important assignment. He is told to watch a man by the name of Tobin Frost (played by Denzel Washington), an ex CIA agent who is wanted by the government for various charges that range from defecting from the agency to killing fellow CIA agents. When the security of the safe house is compromised and paid mercenaries break in to try and take Frost, Weston takes him on the road where the two get into an intense fight from behind the wheel, Frost escapes, and Weston (who knows his career is finished if he fails) tries to find him. And from there, the movie takes all sorts of twists and turns. And while all of these events transpire, Weston is being deeply challenged mentally by Frost. In fact, in one scene, Frost tells Weston that in this profession, the lies build up and build up. “Everyone betrays everyone, and after a while, the truth sounds like a lie.”
One of the things I loved about this movie was that it made you think. It challenges the audience. It is action packed, fast paced, and has an incredible twist to it. The fight scenes are intense and realistic, and the film keeps one’s interest from start to finish.
Out of 4 stars, I give Safe House 4 stars.
The film is rated R and runs 1 hour and 55 minutes.
