The Story:
Courageous is a film about four police officers who make their living confronting dangerous gang members, criminals, and drug dealers, but in their personal lives, they are four fathers whose time, devotion, and patience are consumed with family oriented challenges, circumstances, and hardships that test them on a variety of levels, just before going back to work and facing another day of uncertainty and peril.
In the midst of all the challenges that come their way, the four fathers decide to commit to a resolution that binds them to each other’s scrutiny, and holds each other accountable to love, protect, and serve their families, while at the same time, raising the stakes by being effective spiritual leaders within their homes. And so, you have this situation that welcomes all sorts of tests that threaten to break their commitment to the resolution they signed on to while trying to handle everything else that is on their plate.
My Take:
This movie is a refresher for anyone who is simply looking to watch a movie that is not hard-hearted, overly-cynical, and impertinent. It is a movie that is dramatic, funny, meaningful, promotes commitment to family, guides to the source of temperance when there are numerous trying demands weighing heavy on the leader of that family, and promotes conscientiousness and character building. Believe it or not, all of these things, and then some keep the momentum of the movie fast paced, and intriguing.
Updated Ending:
In 2021, the film was re-released in theaters for its tenth anniversary, but with a new ending. How does the commitment towards this resolution hold up ten years later for these men? What has personal circumstances and global challenges (like COVID) made for this commitment to be all the more challenging? How has God provided for them in that time period, and how did they handle that provision? All of these questions are answered in the updated version, simply titled Courageous: Legacy. The movie will definitely provoke thought and purposeful discussion.
Out of 4 stars, I give this movie 3.
The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours and 9 minutes.
