The other night I went to see “Unknown” with Liam Neeson. It was about a man named Martin Harris, who takes a cab from one place to another and gets involved in a car accident, causing the car to go off a bridge, and causes Harris to hit his head on the backseat window by impact. He is then brought to a nearby hospital where he is diagnosed with a strange case of partial amnesia in the sense that he has mixed memories.
And if that weren’t enough, he finds that his identity has been stolen by another man, and his wife says she doesn’t know him. Angry and confused, he encounters assassins who are determined to kill him. Things aren’t as they seem, and the very things that he forgot are keys to his survival. As he teams up with the woman who saved his life (Diane Kruger) in that accident, he begins to remember more and more of who he is, until the bigger picture comes back into focus. Once the bigger picture is complete, he has a “life changing” wake-up call.
While I thought that the base storyline was somewhat original and interesting, in addition to a surprising plot twist, it had its share of unoriginal elements such as the chases, both “on foot” and “high speed”, intense fights, the good guy in the bad guy’s hands, and so forth. In other words, I kept thinking that too many elements within this movie were recycled from other movies, like, “The Bourne Identity” to name one example. And the ending (which was the cause of all the madness) to me, seemed farfetched and sort of cheesy, which was kind of a disappointing.
Out of 4 stars, I would have to give this movie 2.
The film is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour and 49 minutes.
