Seth Rogen (Superbad, Knocked Up) stars as Brett Reid, a reckless and carefree young man who lands a large media empire due to his father’s untimely death. The death of Reid’s father brings about significant changes in his life which he is unprepared for. After his father’s death, he meets his father’s technological genius Kato (Jay Chou), a martial arts fighter, an inventor, and builder. One night, in attempting to seek “justice” involving his deceased father’s, let’s just say, “symbol of immortality,” Reid and Kato witness a street gang in the process of jumping an unsuspecting couple just walking down the street. Wanting to help the helpless couple, Reid diverts attention away from the couple and causes the gang to come after him. Realizing his limits, Kato intervenes and saves Reid’s life. Highly impressed with Kato’s numerous talents and abilities, Reid tries to talk Kato into hunting down bad guys to do some good, and have some adventure. But there’s a problem. The police see The Green Hornet and Kato as criminals due to an event, so Reid comes up with a plan and uses his media power to paint the Green Hornet and Kato as bad guys, while really being the good guys pursuing the real bad guys. This then lands a problem for the real bad guys, because drug lords and gang leaders see The Green Hornet as stiff competition to their “ruling the streets,” as well as threats to their plans.
I thought this movie was well acted, exciting, and adventurous. “Black Beauty,” the 1965 Chrysler Imperial was really cool, done up well, and I think should be accounted for as one of the main stars of the film along with Rogen and Chou. Since Seth Rogen normally stars in screwball comedies, one goes into this film wondering if this is going to be one of those movies where he essentially plays the same character he plays in every movie he’s in, or is his role in this film going to stand alone on its own and be different. While Rogan does, in a sense, portray the same type of character he plays in every other movie he’s in, I thought there was a fine line between the comedic elements used, the progression of the underlying story itself, and the action and adventure. In other words, I think everything was dispensed very well throughout the story. All in all it was a film that I enjoyed very much.
Out of 4 stars, I would have to give this movie 3 and a half.
The film is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour and 48 minutes.
