The film begins in the year 1941 and is set geographically in Nazi occupied France. The film is about a Jewish woman named Shoshanna, whose family is brutally massacred in front of her, and barely escapes the massacre held by a Colonel named Hans Landa, also known as “the Jew Hunter” of the Waffen-SS. A few years later, in 1944 (for which the rest of this movie is set) this woman runs a movie cinema left to her by her family. While changing the marquee on the front of the movie theater, she is confronted by a man who takes a fond interest in her. This man, Frederick Zoller, is a sniper who is celebrated by the Nazis, and whose ego is enlarged due to the fact that his skills in killing Jews are celebrated in the Nazi propaganda film, “A Nation's Pride.” Shoshanna, later known as Emmanuelle Mimieux is introduced by Fredrick to the killer of her family. Scared, horrified, yet brave, she keeps her cool and conducts a plan to try and get as many Nazi leaders as she can into her cinema so that she can destroy it with them trapped in the process. Can she successfully do this?
Meanwhile, while the details that I just described for you are in the planning process, another group of Jews (Jewish Americans actually) are conjuring up their own plans to assassinate Adolph Hitler, and kills as many Nazi leaders as they can as well. This attempt is led by U.S. Army second lieutenant and the commanding officer of the “Basterds,” Aldo Raine. Aldo Raine, does not mess around. He calls for his people to torture Nazis, carves swastikas in their heads, and calls for his men to scalp as many Nazis as they can. They have a quota of coming up with 100 scalps each. At the same time, Aldo Raines has a very angry, very vengeful Jew known as the “Bear Jew,” who by his own admission, likes to bash the heads in of Nazis with a baseball bat. He is a really interesting character and is a key player in the plan to kill as many Nazi leaders under the direction of Aldo Raine.
There are multiple dynamics at play in this film that make it really interesting. First of all, you have two major assassination plots at play in killing Nazi leaders and each perpetrator of those plots are not aware of each other or their plots. You wonder if one will fail, and the other will be successful, or you wonder if both will run into each other and thwart either plans, causing an escape path for the Nazi leaders. I do say, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino makes this film really interesting and unsuspecting. In other words, you do not know what is going to happen next and you are constantly caught by surprise.
Another element I liked about this film is that there were numerous scenes which were tense and unsuspecting. You have one ego-driven Nazi officer on one coming about all prideful and feeling invincible, and you have another Nazi officer who is similar to the other one, but doesn’t like the other guy. You have two evils in conflict with each other, and that dynamic keeps your attention focused.
The Historical Aspect:
This story is entirely fictional, yet it is based within a true historic backdrop. It is much like Titanic in the sense that it revolves around fictional characters who are affected by events that occurred in actual history.
Even though the film runs 2 hours and 32 minutes, its tense scenes, its level of uncertainty (you don’t know what’s going to happen next), the emotion expressed by these good actors, and the brutal nature of the characters involved all work together in causing the film to be fast-paced and interesting. In my opinion, it kept my interest so well that it didn’t feel like the film was 2 hours and 32 minutes in length.
There is much more about this film that I could go into, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. On a scale of 1 to 4 stars, I would give it 4 stars.
The film is rated R for gore and violence.
