Steve Carrel (40 Year Old Virgin, Evan Almighty) stars as Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) in the new version of the late 1960’s TV classic “Get Smart.”
Siegfried (played by Terance Stamp), the mastermind of an evil organization called KAOS destroys the good organization called CONTROL, and then sets out to kill the President (played by James Caan). While the details are being calculated by KAOS, Maxwell Smart, who works in the research department of CONTROL, is assigned a mission in which he teams up with a very sexy and clever woman by the name of Agent 99 (played by Anne Hathaway). At this point, he must earn his way to becoming an official CONTROL Agent.
I liked the movie pretty much overall, but there were some elements which I thought were irritating. As a person who loves the old TV show, I thought some vital elements in this movie were, compared to the TV show, lacking. A case in point; Siegfried in this movie plays an evil genius, who is both evil and sinister. In the TV show, Siegfried was an evil genius, who was sinister, which is fine, but he also had some good comic lines. The 2008 movie Siegfried was too serious and the only comic elements surrounding him were the “imbeciles” he had working for him. I mean, how many times have we seen that done? Umm, probably to death! Another thing I thought was annoying was the bit where the president was sitting down in a classroom full of children reading a children’s book. Gee, where have we seen that done before? Now I am one to laugh at a funny joke when I see one, but this one has been done to death. It’s been done in Fahrenheit 9/11, Scary Movie 3, and in many TV comedy sketches (like Mad-TV) for years.
So, in essence, for all of the recycled gags from the TV show, the recycled political gags, and the recycled “I’m surrounded by morons” scenes, I think it would be wise for anyone wanting to see this movie to wait till it comes out on DVD. At least that way, you will save yourself half the ticket-price, and still enjoy the parts that were original, the parts that were funny, and the parts that were engaging.
Out of 4 stars, I would have to give it 2 and ½.
