If you are a fan of films that feature a dystopian type society, than Divergent is the film for you.
The Story:
The film begins in the futuristic city of Chicago, which lies in ruin years after a major war. It is believed by the people to be the only city in the world that remains, and so, to maintain order, and keep the peace, the “founders” of a new, post-war societal structure developed a faction system in which every individual is tested psychologically to determine which faction they belong to. There are a total of five major factions within this society. They are….
Erudite—The smart ones. They value logic and knowledge.
Amity—farmers who value kindness, harmony, and happiness.
Candor—value honesty and order and control the justice system.
Dauntless—Brave and daring are the Protectors, soldiers, police.
Abnegation—leads a simple, selfless life dedicated to helping others. They are public servants, trusted to run the Government.
And then there are the factionless, the ones who don’t fit in anywhere.
In this society we see a girl named Beatrice, nicknamed Tris (Shailene Woodley), who was born into the Abnegation faction, and is preparing to take her psychological aptitude test to see which faction, according to the system, best suits her. After learning that her results are inconclusive, she is told that she is “divergent,” which means that she carries too many traits of the Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless factions, and the system cannot place her to one main faction. You see, if these psychological aptitude tests reveal an individual as divergent, they are seen by the leaders of the faction society as a “threat” to the faction system. And so, divergents become a target to be killed.
When the time comes for people to “choose” a faction (influenced heavily by their test results), Tris, not really knowing where she belongs, chooses Dauntless, which shocks her family. In Dauntless, Tris is trained to take on her fears, and learns disciplines needed to protect and defend herself. While in Dauntless, Tris meets a man, a leader within its ranks who learns that she is divergent, and tries to help her master her next psychological exam to make her an official member of Dauntless, which would allow for her to be a part of the police. And so, as Tris grows in skill and ability, she also becomes more independent minded, and more skillful in trying to beat the system. And so, the film centers on Tris’s ability to survive, thrive, and overcome the system she is subjected to.
This film is highly suspenseful and captivating. It is a story of survival and independence in the midst of a controlling society where superiority is maintained by a faction system that thrives on controlling people’s thoughts, and designating their destinies based on the system they made for people. It is also a story of the human condition thriving in the midst of human control. That said, this movie is very entertaining, and interesting, which causes its pace to move rather quickly. It is a film I highly recommend seeing.
Out of 4 stars, I give Divergent 4 stars.
Divergent is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours and 19 minutes.
