“Love Him/ Hate Him. You Don’t Know Him.” This powerful caption on the promotional standee for this film makes a very captivating and thought provoking point. Those who love him love their own preconceived idea about him. Those who do not, for the most part, are individuals who depend on their self reliance to shape their future and the future of their children. These individuals see the “handwriting on the wall” in regards to the effect that the President’s policies has had on their self reliance on the American domestic front. These self reliant individuals also see our status as an independent and self reliant nation in the midst of an international aligning body that will most definitely affect the United State’s ability to not only remain self-sufficient (should it remain a superpower), but also serve as the primary foundation for all democracies worldwide. In other words, if America goes down, all democracies worldwide go down with it.
From Dinesh D’Souza and the Academy Award winning producer of Schindler’s list (as well as various other Steven Spielberg films) comes this very constructive, eye opening investigation regarding the past of President Obama, influences who shaped his worldview, and where we are headed as a country due to both. In other words, from a psychological frame of mind we are given the framework for the agenda the president has for America, and where it is destined to go until he leaves office.
At the beginning of this film, we see Dinesh D’Souza compare his life with Barack Obama’s. Dinesh came from India to America. Obama came from Indonesia to America. They both were born the same year (1961). They both graduated their Ivy League colleges the same year (1983). They both even got married the same year (1992). They both have a lot in common, but their future aspirations and impressions for America led them to take different paths. For one, Dinesh, coming to America from India, had high hopes for this country. Mr. D’Souza states in the film that where he came from, your destiny is handed to you. In America, your destiny is basically left up to you. You write it. There is one particular part in this film where Dinesh recalls his heritage to someone who resembles a “beatnik,” and the man says that Dinesh’s country sounds so “liberating.” Then Dinesh, having the experience of living in his own country asks him, “What’s so liberating about it?”
The film then explores the environment Barack Obama grew up in. He reverts to excerpts from Obama’s book “Dreams from my Father”, and actually interviews some of the natives that interacted with, and were close to those who raised Barack Obama and as such, were most influential in shaping Obama’s worldview. In other words, what you find is a well-rounded view of perspectives from those who knew his family the best. It even leads to a couple of interviews with family members, including Obama’s half-brother George.
As we get into the meat of the film, we see a worldview shaped, and his adolescent years nurtured by communist mentors (like Frank Marshall Davis, Member of the Communist Party USA, member # 47544) who had an FBI file that rendered him a threat to national security had a war actually broken out between the United States and Russia during the height of the Cold War.
We also see Barack Obama’s “invisible” rise to power out of nowhere, a small glimpse into the psychology behind the cult of personality that rose him to global prominence, with practically no substantiated policy or executive experience (just smooth talk and an avid promotional machine), and how that is being utilized to thus permit the downsizing of America, the growth of other third-world nations (at the expense of American taxpayers), and also work to disarm our own nation (that’s right, our own nation) and allies in the company of other more hostile nations (like China, Russia, Iran) that are boldly increasing their arms.
Movie Shatters Expectations:
Now that the film is doing well, many in the media are actively trying to dim its prospects. They are now trying to call the movie an “anti-Obama” movie, when it says nothing derogatory about the man, and they are trying to call those behind it “galvanizing conservatives.” The target words that trigger a polarized response are being executed at this time, when in reality, when this film was first brought out, the media largely paid it no mind. Hmmm. On another note, as I was leaving the theater, I overheard a group of young people talk about the movie. One guy said that this was nothing he expected it to be. He thought it was going to be a “right wing hit piece” badmouthing Obama, playing on fears of a possible civil war, and then some. He was surprised, because he thought for himself to give it a try and take in facts. From there, the decision he makes is his own.
As a film I give it 4 stars, but not so much because of the informative content (although it is very thought-provoking). It was down to earth, informative, and reasonable. In other words, it is a film that not only appeals to Constitutional Conservatives, but disaffected Democrats, Independents, and Republicans who may lean more left than right. In other words, if you hold no affiliation to the Communist Party USA, The Democratic Socialists of America, or other movements like them, then it is next to impossible for someone not to give this film a try.
The Film is rated PG and runs 1 hour and 29 minutes
